Fergus Bary
Director
 
Fergus Barry has worked as Director of the Human Resource Management Programmes at the Irish Management Institute. In that role he developed the Diploma in Strategic Human Resource Management and the Essentials of Human Resource Management Programmes. He also developed and delivered Management Development and Human Resource Management Consultancy Programmes for a wide variety of Organisations in both the Private and Public sectors. He has delivered programmes for organisations such as General Electric, Pepsi, Boston Scientific, Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment, Department of Foreign Affairs,  Dairygold, Central Bank, Eagle Star, Kerry Group, Glaxo Smithkline and Fexco etc.  As Head of the School of Business and Humanities at the National College of Ireland he led the design, approval and launch of a new Masters Degree in Human Resource Management.  Fergus has lectured in Human Resource Management at both under graduate and post graduate levels.

Fergus has led recent research projects on Strategic Retention, Performance Management, Succession Planning and the usage of Competencies in industry. He is currently researching the Effective Management of Mergers and Acquisitions and his book on Strategic Human Resource Management will be published in Autumn 2004.

He is unique amongst Irish and UK consultants in that he has adapted the ‘best practice’ thinking from the USA and particularly the practical models and tools developed by Dave Ulrich and Wayne Brockbank at Michigan and uses these to improve HR practice in client companies.  He has presented with Dave Ulrich and has brought the leading HR thought leaders such as Mike Beer (Harvard), Charles O’Reilly (Stanford), and Jeffrey Pfeffer (Stanford) to Ireland.

Prior to joining IMI he had over 17 years experience in the Human Resources area and has held key roles in:

Fergus has delivered a number of papers at international conferences on topics such as Strategic Human Resource Management, Team Working and the Role of the Front Line Manager.  He has acted as lead tutor with the ‘Industry Matters’ training programme for post-graduate students.   He has also lectured at graduate and postgraduate level on topics such as Human Resource Management, Business Communications and Industrial Relations.

His major interest is in the development and implementation of Strategic Human Resource Management Policies and Procedures which maximise performance and improve business results.
